Stability of National?Identity Content: Level, Predictors, and Implications

A neglected topic in empirical research on national identity is its stability at the individual level, and this especially true for content, that is, meaning elements people associate with concept of nation. In article, we study key dimensions national-identity content. We ask three simple questions: How stable content—as captured ethnic/civic framework—at level citizens? Are there clear differences across subgroups? What are implications interindividual stability? Analyzing data from four waves a large-scale panel survey German citizens (N = 4,654) collected over five-year period (2016–21), show high but not perfect degree to which individuals subscribe ethnic civic criteria nationhood. Second, find little difference as function several theoretically selected characteristics. Third, association between content relevant political attitudes (immigration far-right party support) increases intraindividual stability. These findings have important our understanding how shaped mobilized it can influence behaviors.
